Together, for the Candles of the Heart

Every 8 December, the people of Lyon are invited to place candles on their window-sills and help make the city shine brightly in a twinkling show of lights. But if you live abroad, rest reassured – this year, once again, you can honour the tradition all over the world…

Lyon natives, whether based in their home city or elsewhere, are invited to take part in the festival on 8 December, courtesy of the Candles of the Heart exhibit staged by the City of Lyon – and thus help perpetuate a tradition rooted in sharing and solidarity.

So that the largest number can take part, though far away, the City of Lyon is again making Candles of the Heart available to buy online. For each candle bought on the site, a real candle will be placed in Lyon on the evening of 8 December, to create an evolving lightwork. After Les Petits Frères des Pauvres, a charity devoted to vulnerable elderly people, this year’s e-candle operation will benefit the vulnerable students supported by Gaelis (“independent Lyon student associations and representatives solidarity group”), a non-profit that has worked hard and wide during the challenging pandemic period. ONLYLYON ambassadors, Lyon natives, and lovers of Lyon – join us in this wave of generosity by buying one or more e-candles (€2 each). All proceeds will go to Gaelis. Reach out in solidarity to the most fragile members of society.

How to buy an e-Candle of the Heart

ONLYLYON ambassadors (whether you’re in Lyon, Montreal or Tokyo) – show solidarity by buying e-candles and help create a poetic lightwork. Together, we can make a difference! On the evening of 8 December, on Place des Jacobins in Lyon, the Lumignons du Cœur (Candles of the Heart) lightwork will feature the candles bought online in a fairytale illuminated water garden, and convey your personal messages. Taking part is easy. Buy your e-candle(s) and in your personal message include this wording: “Ensemble, allumons nos lumignons dans le monde ! #FDL2021worldwide” And new this year, you can also sign your donation. To do this, write: “[First name], ONLYLYON Ambassador in [name of city]”
